I am having a similar problem with encryption that seems to be a symptom of a machine shift, but like always there are other factors. I picked up a client who had a DNN 2.X install that their webadmin had migrated to 3.0. After years of tinkering and messing with 3rd party modules their site completely de-stabilized. This is where I came in. They are running about 10 portals off of one instance and it was crashing the server on a shared box through a hosting company. I migrated them to a dedicated box at a data center I use.
Their first box was a Win 2k Server and their current Box is a Win 2003 box. What has occurred is all the user accounts are to be locked out and return a 'incorrect string format' error. Through running the site locally I was able to step through and force execution of the code down 'Valid User' authentication path which got me a logged in. Once logged in was able to create a new SuperUser account.

I was then able to logout of my 'forced' login and then login using no trickery with the new account and have complete host account access. Now, there are several other factors here I'm sorting through. I know the instance of DNN I inherited is not healthy. The person who used to maintain it didn't mess with the code, but she did for various reasons mess with the database and do such things as roll out updates on the live site without backing-up so botched updates or module adds had to be 'repaired' rather than just rolled back from. My question is: Has anyone else had a similar experience?

In my case I went from a 2k machine to a 2003 machine.
